How it works

From a photon to your phone charger

A solar system has no engine and nothing that spins. It's a quiet chain of five steps that runs every daylight hour.

STEP 1

Sunlight hits the panel

Each panel is a grid of solar cells made mostly of silicon. Sunlight is packets of energy called photons, and they rain onto the cell's surface all day.

The photovoltaic effect

When photons strike the silicon, they knock electrons loose. The cell is built with two layers that push those electrons in one direction — creating an electric current. This is the "photovoltaic" (light-to-voltage) effect.

An inverter converts it

Panels produce direct current (DC). Your home and the grid run on alternating current (AC). An inverter sits in between and converts DC into usable AC electricity.

Your home uses it first

The AC power flows to your lights, fridge, and outlets. Solar power is used the instant it's made, so your home draws less from the grid.

Extra power is stored or sold

Make more than you use? It charges a battery, or flows back to the grid. Many utilities credit you for that exported power through net metering.

Good to know: panels still work on cloudy days — just at reduced output. They actually run slightly more efficiently in cool, bright weather than in extreme heat.

Not all panels are the same

Three technologies dominate the market. They differ mainly in efficiency, price, and how much roof they need.

Most popular

Monocrystalline

Cut from a single, pure silicon crystal. The most efficient mainstream option and the sleekest looking — but the priciest to make.

Look: Uniform black cells
Cost: Higher
Best for: Limited roof space, want maximum output
Budget-friendly

Polycrystalline

Made by melting many silicon fragments together. Slightly less efficient, but cheaper. You'll need a bit more roof area for the same output.

Look: Speckled blue cells
Cost: Lower
Best for: Plenty of roof space, tighter budget
Flexible

Thin-film

A thin layer of photovoltaic material on a backing. Lightweight and flexible, but the least efficient — so it needs the most space.

Best for: Large flat roofs, RVs, unusual surfaces

Common questions

The things people ask first

They produce no power at night and reduced power under clouds — roughly 10–25% of peak output on an overcast day. That's why systems are sized around your full daily need, and why batteries or a grid connection cover the gaps.

Most panels carry a 25-year performance warranty and keep working beyond it. Output slowly fades — typically losing about 0.5% per year — so a 25-year-old panel still runs at around 85–90% of its original capacity.

Very little. There are no moving parts. An occasional rinse to clear dust or leaves is usually enough; in many places rain does the job. The inverter is the part most likely to need replacing once over the system's life.

If you make more than you use, the surplus either charges a home battery or flows back to the grid. Under net metering, your utility credits you for exported power, which offsets what you draw at night.

Not automatically. A standard grid-tied system shuts off in an outage for safety. To keep power flowing you need a battery or a hybrid inverter with backup capability.

Properly installed, no — they're mounted on rails attached to your rafters, and the covered area is often protected from weather and sun. A good installer checks your roof's condition and age first.
